Intro To Owning A Web Site

Finding a Hosting Company

Get a recommendation from someone you trust.

Hosting companies should cost between $5-25 for something simple. Be picky with your hosting company because a signing onto a bad company can be a headache.

What bad hosting companies do

  • They continue billing you even after you've cancelled (this happens alot).
  • Their servers are down often due to outages or "maintenance".
  • They register your domain name under their company and won't relinquish the ownership to you if you try to leave.

Info You Should Get After You've Signed Up

After you sign up with a company, the hosting company should give you the following pieces of information:

  • Hosting server's FTP address
  • mail server addresses
  • username
  • password

Write this information down because even though you might not know how to use this, the person you hire will need some of this info.
