Basics of Starting a Business

Starting Your Business in Denver

Starting your business requires two things:

  1. Registering your business with the Secretary of State
  2. Obtaining your Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS
  3. Start a business checking account

These three things have to be done in order.

Registering your business name

Step 1: Check to see if your business name is available.

Search your business name at the Secretary of State website's Record Search.

Step 2: Fill out the form for a new business record.

Whether it's and LLC, non-profit or corporation, the form you need can be found at on the SoS website's File A Document page.

Step 3: File the form at the Secretary of State Office.

The fastest way is to file in person at their office located at 1700 Broadway, Denver, CO 80290. That's at the corner of 17th and Broadway.

Bring in the form and pay the filing fee associated with business you're filing. The form gets stamped immediately and you're in business. Bring change for metered parking.

Obtaining Your EIN

You can apply for Employer Identification Number from the IRS in several ways. The easiest are:

  1. Apply Online
  2. Download a Form SS-4 and fax it to the IRS at one of these fax numbers.

It takes about 2 weeks to get the IRS document with your EIN number.

Start a business checking account

Take those two documents, the business name registration and the EIN document from the IRS, to any bank. With those two documents, you will be able to start a busines checking account.
