How To Do Search Engine Optimization For Your Homepage

What you don't know will hurt you

What most people don't know about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is that you can only key a single page to 2-3 key phrases.

There's no way to key your homepage to dozens of keywords. Google made sure of that almost a decade ago, yet site owners are still trying to stuff their metatags with keywords and realizing it doesn't work.

Even worse, they try keyword stuffing into hidden text areas on their homepage and wonder why Google has drop their PageRank to zero effectively banning them from ever getting a high search result on Google.

Most site owners also don't know that Google sandboxes new sites for 2-4 months so that new sites can't get a high listing until after the Sandbox wait period is finished. What you don't know can hurt you.

This newsletter is a step-by-step guide of how I'm doing the SEO for the homepage of Ockham Design. I will try to dispel some myths and show you exactly what I did so you can duplicate the effort for your site.

Step 1: Finding out your key words and phrases

Don't choose key phrases that don't get searched.

That seems like a simple concept, but most people don't get it until you tell them. There's a couple of tools that will show you which key phrases are being searched.

I start with the Google KeyWord Tool.
