How I Designed My Website

Writing The Content

Duration: 85+ hours

Writing content is the most time consuming part of this site. It's also the most important part of this site.

It takes on average an hour to write and edit each page of content.

Writing content is like taking a photograph. Anyone can do it, but not everyone can do it well.

For web sites, the writing is all about communication. What is it that I want to communicate to my inteded audience? What impressions do I want the visitors to take away?

This site is written for information, and there's a lot of it. Most of it people will skim, the same way people skim Wikipedia entries. I long pieces of content with callout text that summarizes what I want to say.

Writing is pretty simple. You just have to site down and do it. I try to write a few pages per day. It's a lot of content to cover and I know it will take a lot of time.

I write for my intended audience which is anyone looking to create a website. My angle for the content is web site creation and ownership from business owners point of view and not from the designer point of view. Every designer things everyone should have a web site if they own a business, but I don't think that feasible in many cases.

The content is written to give alternatives and to provide as much information as possible for someone who knows nothing about owning a website to make a informed decision on what it is they're buying.
